Q4 iPad Loses Market Share To Android

Apple's fourth quarter figures show a staggering drop of 20 percent market share for the Apple iPad. Market research firm, Strategy Analytics released figures showing the Apple iPad held a 75.3 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2010 with Android managing to capture 21.6 percent.

2010 figures overall show that Apple held a 84.1 percent market share with Android trailing behind at 13.1 percent, figures also reveal that the iPad sold significantly more units in the fourth quarter than the third, so what does this all mean? It simply means whilst the iPad went into the year as one of the only mainstream Tablet producers they commanded a much higher market share. By the time Android Tablets were released they were playing catch-up. Apple sold many more iPads in the fourth quarter as more consumers picked up the product and became brand aware.

With 2011 set to be the year of the tablet, it will be interesting to see how the Apple iPad maintains it's position at the top of the tablet leader board, with the likes of Asus, Motorola, LG and Samsung all releasing tablets this year as well as the highly anticipated Blackberry Playbook.
