Whilst the announcement was made last week the post did say to be patient as the roll-out could take a couple of weeks.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Spotted on Expansys

Yesterday we posted the release details on the Samsung Galaxy S2.

Today we've found the Galaxy S2 on Expansys and whilst we know it's been up on the website for a while thought it was worth a post. The handset, on Expansys, is priced at £629.99 which is £30 more than the price on, also, the availability date on Expansys is 20th June 2011 some 3 months after the release date on

The product page on Expansys says: "The Samsung Galaxy S II is the follow-up to the extremely succesful Galaxy S, and it is a powerhouse of a smartphone in a fantastically sleek and lightweight design. Considerably thinner than the original Galaxy S and rivals such as the iPhone 4 (8.49mm v 9.3mm) the new Samsung Galaxy S II is light (only 117g) and packs the latest version of Android (Gingerbread)."

AMOLED vs LCD - Whats The Difference?

So AMOLED and LCD, what's the difference? Why should I be interested in AMOLED rather than LCD? Surely a screen is a screen? Well, if you have these questions then you have come to the right place.

AMOLED stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode and consists of a matrix of OLED pixels which light up upon electrical activation this is in contrast to an LCD display where pixels are shown using a back light to emit light through a crystal display. LCD displays tend to be sharper with better colour reproduction but AMOLED displays are better for brighter more vibrant colours along with far less battery consumption.

  1. AMOLED displays consume considerably less power than both standard OLED displays as well as LCD displays.
  2. These displays typically provide a higher refresh rate than passive-matrix OLED displays.

  1. AMOLED displays can be difficult to view in direct sunlight although this is becoming less of an issue with the development of Super-AMOLED, a newer type of AMOLED developed by Samsung which has closed the gap between the layers of the screen.
  2. Due to the current high demand for the display technology current supplies are short leading to various manufacturers implementing other display technologies in their devices.
  3. AMOLED displays do not last as long as other display technologies. Whilst this is not a major problem with cell-phones it does prove a problem with televisions and devices with a longer life span.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Arrives

This week, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. The pack includes a collection of updates and security fixes for the popular Windows 7 operating system but little information has been available regarding specific changes made by applying the service pack. On clicking the information link on the Microsoft site it took us to a blank page (not the best start), we then downloaded the spreadsheet listing the changes although this was so lengthy we just held our breadth and hit the 'update' button.

It would have been nice to see some feature updates included in the service pack as had been included in previous operating system service packs but no such joy. One of the specific areas requiring patching is Media Center. Media Center appears to have various bugs after the last batch of updates was released to fix various problems, one such problem appears to be Media Center not honoring the recording start/finish padding which can be slightly frustrating with the only work-around being to enter padding information on each individual recording. Maybe the next batch of updates will resolve Media Center bugs but we wont hold our breath for that one.

Android 2.4 To Combine Honeycomb and Gingerbread

You may remember a few weeks back, we posted information regarding Android Honeycomb not coming to mobiles. Whilst this has not changed, part of what was said has become more of a reality: However it was also said that in the future Google would like to unite the numbers system...'I think that coming together is a good idea. What we're trying to do here is make a base platform that's so good, that others only need to add native elements in their core areas.

Online rumors and speculation are strongly pointing to an update to the existing Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system to 2.4 which will be a blend of both Gingerbread and Honeycomb but will still be called Gingerbread. The new release is expected around April if speculation is correct with some devices scheduled to be released in the next couple of months already running the new version but no official announcements have been made. One of the core features this new version will add is the ability to run dual-core apps, whether this is the only upgrade or one of many remains to be seen.

Nokia Workers Walkout Over Microsoft Partnership

We're pretty sure Nokia's woes can't get much worse. Nokia announced today it will be dropping its Symbian operating system and in its place will be using Windows Phone 7. Whilst this news for many has not come as a surprise, it prompted 1,000 of its employees to walk according to Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

Nokias shares fell by 13% in light of the news and rumors of unrest within the company will no doubt add up to a dissapointing day to say the least for Nokia.

Nokia, The Sinking Ship, Will Survive!!!

Finnish mobile company Nokia have been hitting the headlines lately for a variety of reasons. One of the major reasons is because a host of leaked information regarding the companies market and strategy status, so what's the deal? Well, for those of you who didn't predict this prior to Androids release and around the time of the first generation iPhone, Nokia are having trouble being competitive in the smartphone market. So where did it all go wrong? Well, we image it all went wrong at the point when, whoever it was said something along the lines of: "Nokia should continue to development of Symbian".

The problems may not be wholly due to Nokia's stance on Symbian but there's no doubt it's a major contributer. So what next from Nokia? They are no doubt going to switch platforms but to what? Android? Microsoft? Nokia's CEO was quoted as saying: "Our competitors aren't taking our market share with devices; they are taking our market share with an entire ecosystem. This means we're going to have to decide how we either build, catalyse or join an ecosystem,". Many suggestions on the new partnership point towards Nokia - Microsoft but we're putting our money on Nokia - Android. We feel Android is Nokia's only chance of re-capturing the fan-base they once had.

HP TouchPad Tablet - The WebOS Powered HP Tablet

Yesterday, HP unveiled the highly anticipated HP TouchPad. The WebOS powered tablet has been on the cards since the days of the Palm brand and what was then expected to be called the PalmPad but HP since did away with the Palm Brand. HP then took the HP Slate and went back to the drawing board to develop their new tablet. Suggestion is that HP is hoping to turn WebOS into an iPad killer but you'll have to wait until the summer when it's released.

In terms of the TouchPad, here's the expected specs:

  • WebOS 3.0
  • 9.7 Inch (1024x768) Capacitive Touchscreen
  • Weighs 740g
  • 1.2GHz Dual-Core Snapdragon
  • 512MB RAM
  • Front Facing 1.3MP Camera
  • Gyroscope
  • Accelerometer
  • 3G
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Flash 10.1

According to reports online the HP TouchPad will touchdown in the UK and US in September 2011.

Android 2.3.3 Update to add New NFC Capabilities

The Android team over at Google have been busy knocking up the latest system update for Android Gingerbread. The update, 2.3.3 will include a few updates to what is turning out to be the very popular, NFC capabilities of handsets. Not quite the drop in the ocean many predicted.

As NFC (Near Field Communication) becomes more popular both with businesses and consumers this update will add the following set of new APIs:

  • NFC-A (ISO 14443-3A)
  • NFC-B (ISO 14443-3B)
  • NFC-F (JIS 6319-4)
  • NFC-V (ISO 15693)
  • ISO-DEP (ISO 14443-4)
  • Mifare Classic
  • Mifare Ultralight
  • NFC Forum NDEF tags

It's unlikely you'll see any visible evidence in changes to NFC API's but as developers take advantage of these changes and additions they'll no doubt bear fruit in ease of use and compatibility.

Other areas receiving improvements or new API's are; Bluetooth, Graphics and Speech Recognition.

Blackberry Torch White Free on Vodafone

We've discovered the Blackberry Torch White is now available on Vodafone for Free on a £35 a month plan. Check out the page here.

The handset had only spent a short time on the network's coming soon page, originally spotted on the 20th January and you can now get hold of it on Voda for £35/month deal. Alternatively, you can opt for the £20/month deal and then stump up the £299 for the mobile.

Vodafone have still got a number of big hitters on their coming soon page. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc as well as the Google Nexus S all in the line up.

Microsoft Denies Copying Google Search

Microsoft has come out of last weeks debacle over copying Google search results strongly denying any claims of foul play. According to Information Week Yusuf Mehdi, the Senior Vice President for Microsoft's online services division said: "We do not copy results from competitors. Period. Full stop,".

What's lost in this whole argument over 'did they', 'didnt they' is what the purpose of a search engine is. It's surely about discovering the most relevant results from a search, whether these results have been copied or not is not as important as the accuracy of results. Perhaps if the shoe were on the other foot, Google might carry out similar practices albeit in a different 'less evil' way but this must surely be by-the-by. Google wont lose thousands of customers to Bing over this, fact is, Bing still don't have the algorithm so results would need copying on an ongoing basis and if it keeps healthy competition between the two high then good stuff. Interesting none-the-less to see the lengths Google will go to in protecting their golden egg (not that I blame them).

Google Nexus S White Confirmed for Vodafone

A recent post over at Tech Radar has stated Vodafone have confirmed they will be stocking the Nexus S White 'in the next few months'.

Whilst no official date has been confirmed we believe the handset will be available around april time. Also, reports suggest the Nexus S White will be available on Vodafone from around the £30 a month mark but it's likely this will be a 24 month deal. Fingers crossed for a slightly better deal and an 18 month contract bearing in mind the Nexus S Black price has dropped in the past 2 months. Here's hoping.

Q4 iPad Loses Market Share To Android

Apple's fourth quarter figures show a staggering drop of 20 percent market share for the Apple iPad. Market research firm, Strategy Analytics released figures showing the Apple iPad held a 75.3 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2010 with Android managing to capture 21.6 percent.

2010 figures overall show that Apple held a 84.1 percent market share with Android trailing behind at 13.1 percent, figures also reveal that the iPad sold significantly more units in the fourth quarter than the third, so what does this all mean? It simply means whilst the iPad went into the year as one of the only mainstream Tablet producers they commanded a much higher market share. By the time Android Tablets were released they were playing catch-up. Apple sold many more iPads in the fourth quarter as more consumers picked up the product and became brand aware.

With 2011 set to be the year of the tablet, it will be interesting to see how the Apple iPad maintains it's position at the top of the tablet leader board, with the likes of Asus, Motorola, LG and Samsung all releasing tablets this year as well as the highly anticipated Blackberry Playbook.

Android Takes Most Popular Smartphone OS

Android has officially become the worlds most popular smartphone operating system. The top spot was previously held by Nokia's Symbian but figures out this week revealed Android has topped that figure with 32.9 million global sales last quarter.

The momentum of Google's Android operating system seems unstoppable with many statisticians pointing to even further growth this year. The platform has been picked up by a wide range of product manufacturers from Samsung to HTC and with the platform offering greater flexibility Android has risen to the top becoming a serious contender to the iPhone and Apple products.

Blackberry Takes Top UK Smartphone Spot

RIM has release statistics from GfK showing BlackBerry phones held 28.2 percent of the market, a greater share than the likes of HTC and Apple. According to figures released, over 500,000 BlackBerry handsets were sold in December 2010, giving it a record 36 percent share of the smartphone market in the UK.

Stephen Bates Blackberry's UK Managing Director, put the brands sales success down to the increasing popularity of the phones among non-business customers. He said that younger phone buyers were attracted by the free BlackBerry Messenger service, as well as improved performance on mobile internet and email services.

Earlier this week, Canalys released figures showing that global shipments of Android handsets hit 32.9 million in the final quarter of 2010 – more than phones on any other platform, with Symbian just behind with shipments of 31 million. Principal analyst at Canalys, Chris Jones, said: "Vendors can't afford to be complacent. 2011 is set to be a highly competitive year, with manufacturers looking to use new technology, such as dual-core processors, near-field communications and 3D displays, to differentiate their products and maintain value."
